Embarking on a Transformative Journey: Basic Police Development Learning Programme

SAPS Basic Police Development Learning Programme:= Joining the South African Police Service marks the beginning of an intensive and transformative experience for police recruits through the Basic Police Development Learning Programme (BPDLP). This comprehensive 24-month program is designed to equip newly-appointed police officials with the necessary legal and policing skills to uphold the principles of the Constitution of South Africa and serve their communities effectively.

SAPS Basic Police Development Learning Programme The Agreement and Purpose:

Upon recruitment, a Memorandum of Agreement is established between the South African Police Service and the police recruit for a contractual period of 24 months. This period is dedicated to the Basic Police Development Learning Programme, which aims to:

  1. Enable police officials to apply legal and policing skills for the protection and service of communities.
  2. Improve service effectiveness, enhancing community satisfaction, and contributing to the mission of creating a safe and secure environment for all South Africans.

SAPS Basic Police Development Learning Programme Training Academies:

The program is conducted at accredited SAPS academies, strategically located across the country. Notable academies include SAPS Academy All Saints, SAPS Academy Chatsworth, and SAPS Academy Tshwane, among others.

SAPS Basic Police Development Learning Programme Structure of the BPDLP:

  1. Phase One: Academy (10 months)
    • Foundational phase focusing on acquiring necessary knowledge and skills.
    • Practical application of knowledge and skills.
  2. Phase Two: Workplace Experience (12 months)
    • Exposure at a station, applying acquired skills in a real-world setting.
  3. Phase Three: Academy (2 months)
    • Integrated assessments to evaluate the trainee’s competence.

Completion and Permanent Enlistment:

Upon successful completion of the training, police trainees are permanently enlisted as constables in the South African Police Service.

SAPS Basic Police Development Learning Programme Payment and Benefits:

During the 24-month period, police trainees receive the following:

  • Phase 1 (10 months at the SAPS Academy):
    • Monthly payment of R3,175.00
    • Free meals and accommodation
    • Polmed medical aid (lower plan membership) with no pension fund
  • Phases 2 and 3 (12 months in the workplace and 2 months integrated assessment):
    • Monthly payment of R7,275.00
    • Own meals and accommodation
    • Polmed medical aid (lower or higher plan membership), pension fund, and all other benefits (leave, allowances, etc.)
  • Permanent appointment after 24 months:
    • Monthly payment of R10,307.00
    • All benefits applicable to SAPS Act members.
